Man Of Arun – Content Is The Enemy Of Art (BIWT No.2)

Before deciding on the track Pyramidion for February’s Phantom Circuit internet radio session I toyed with a synth 12 bar blues but the 1888 recording of Arthur Sullivan I used within it is a bit difficult to understand without subtitles. So I’ve done a version for my ‘Because It Was There’ series. (Elongated backing track a longs ways down the page).

I went to add a few useful links to this video on YouTube but ended up writing a short discourse on MIDI Guitar In Practise.

Though there are ways to convert an ordinary guitar signal to MIDI, if you want the ability to play polyphonically with independent control of each string, particularly when bending, then as of the time of writing a hexaphonic pickup is necessary. That sends six signals to be converted to MIDI and currently the best at that conversion in terms of both speed and accuracy is the Fishman TriplePlay; here in the Connect version which plugs into a computer via a USB cable.

Man Of Arun – David Bailey (BIWT No.3)

Set arpeggiators to stun!

The folks at the Music Weeklies Challenge post a regular theme to prompt people to knock out some tunes and I’ve had a bash at the latest, ‘Gods Of Olympus’.

I went for the most obvious choice of David Bailey.

Not unexpectedly it didn’t come out as I intended and there wasn’t enough time to fulfil my original plan of adding a mantra to the start, the OM one.

Man Of Arun – Der Anfang vom Ende (BIWT No.4)

A second go at the Music Weeklies Challenge with the theme this week being a choice of any of the previous two hundred suggestions. I was tempted to combine a few and try my hand at ‘Dinosaur Kung-Fu Master Sexy Time’ but ultimately settled on 189: New Beginnings

Originally this was going to be a half song / half instrumental chimera but a lack of time to do the words meant the hasty addition of slide guitar. And it sounds like it.

Man Of Arun – Something To Do With Spring (BIWT No.6)

The journey was more important than the destination on this one where I used both chords for this track prompted by the Music Weeklies Challenge which started very much in the organised sound vein but then took an unexpected turn. Some of the ideas and techniques used will certainly show up elsewhere.

The task was to transcribe a drawing by Stephanie Merchak to sound and it’s just possible something was lost in translation.

As the idea was to do a tune based on a picture I saw an opportunity to draw on my stock of software bought in sales that seemed a really good idea at the time but I haven’t got round to using much – in this case Photosounder

With that I produced a number of basic tracks across the range from tonal to noise which were then effected to an inch of their lives. The only things played were the aforementioned two chords for arpeggio duties and the very irritating bass synth riff.

Extra marks for naming the 1986 tune where I first used the effect on the end? This competition limited to the 9 people still living who heard it in the first place.

Man Of Arun – Sing The Body Electric (BIWT No.7)

Down to the wire in the nick of time by the skin of my teeth here’s my go at this week’s Music Weeklies Challenge ‘Body Work’.

It had to be based on sounds produced or emanating from the human body. I blew. And then used the resulting recordings as samples to replace waveforms in presets from the Arturia synth Pigments.

All the melodic parts were played on a guitar fitted with a Fishman TriplePlay to convert the signals from each string to MIDI.

The Universal Vibe – Groovy Come Crazy (1990)

Video made using the ProjectM visualizer by combining a few presets.

The only complete track by short lived 1990 band as committed to four track cassette. Also known as Everything for their one gig supporting Starfish at the Apple Tree pub in Crawley.

There was a cover of Lou Reed’s ‘There Is No Time’ in the set – largely because I liked the line, ‘This is no time for circumlocution’.

Man Of Arun – Andhrímnir – Caterer To The Gods! (BIWT No.11)

‘I should be so Loki, Loki Loki Loki’.

In which our hero strikes out against the tyranny of received musical form / wasn’t going to go up against Wagner thank you very much.

A return to the Music Weeklies challenge which on this occasion asked for a tune based on Norse Mythology. I may have failed on the tune aspect.
