It used to be common when publishing a reference book to intentionally include an error so you could easily find who plagiarised your work. I doubt that’s the case here but what looks like the BBCs original cock-up has shown up how easily mistakes are spread in the digital age.
What’s difficult to grasp is how such an easy to check error was made in the first place and how it passed editorial approval.
