I saw a tweet about piracy taking money from authors but the expected follow up condemning second hand books and lending to friends failed to appear. Not that I would steal nor suggest it but more the point is that it follows the trend of demanding you choose a side with no possibility of a middle ground or that an issue might not be black or white. For example like music piracy it can lead to sales and an illegally downloaded book isn’t necessarily a substitute for one that was purchased; it would likely never have been read at all.
This is the same tactics that failed with music downloading as people see through the hyperbole and the crime comes to be seen as acceptable. It’s much the same for Copyright we’re the balance has shifted from encouraging work to excessive profit making, mainly for the major Publishers.
And I wonder with the ongoing war on libraries and growing inequality how many will experience a new author without pirate downloads.
