The leading riders climb Mount Ventoux in single file between massive crowds encroaching onto the road and a line of camera motorbikes in front

Richie Porte, Chris Froome and Bauke Mollema on the climb to Mount Ventoux during the 12th stage of the 2016 Tour de France. Winds gusting to 120kmph near the summit had forced the climb to be shortened by six kilometres so the Bastille Day crowds had to fit in a much shorter distance leading to even greater encroachment onto the road, ultimately causing the television camera motorbike to stop and the riders to crash into it.
